Its the second largest castle in the Balkans and is unique because it was used as a garrison in prison untill very recently. The citadel was probably built between the 8th and 7th centuries BC and later fortified in the 5th century BC. It was further built and developed in the early Ottoman Empire and has had further improvements under the reign of Alipasha
